How Do Recommendations Really Work?

~ November 16, 2006 at 17:58 by jcrist1027 (Views: 163 )

I'm guessing that the recommendations do not take into account the ratings of songs, just the artists and genres right?

I tested the recommendations by building a play list and I created a seed which was all my higest rated songs in my iTunes library. It's a playlist of 931 songs, quite diverse with many artists in multiple genres. I set the max number of tracks to 250, All Music. When it builds the playlist, the list of recommendations is tiny (under 20 songs), and worse, if I clear the Playlist and hit get tracks again, it loads the same handful of recommendations. I even tried setting the max tracks lower, then deleting tracks in the recommended playlist, then raising the max tracks after the initial playlist load and click Get More Tracks and it keeps bringing up the same 15 recommendations. Makes the whole recommendations feature not very useful.

RSS Feed for Just Played?

~ November 9, 2006 at 17:01 by musick_in_the_head (Views: 172 )

Are there simple RSS feeds for Just Played? The latest version of AIM supports a "buddy feed" that aggegates a bunch of personal feeds then lights up an alert next to your name in the buddy list when something changes.

I've got it working with Last.fm's recently played feed, but would prefer to use mystrands since Last.fm doesn't track any streamed songs.

Article in Macworld magazine

~ November 6, 2006 at 2:03 by estusal (Views: 139 )

MyStrands is featured in Mathew Honan's article on this month's issue of Macworld ("Network to New Music") which was originally published in Playlist magazine (http://playlistmag.com/secrets/2006/10/novplaylist/index.php). That's how I found out about this place and I think it's great for all music lovers. I'm glad you guys were prepared to take care of all Mac users and those of us who speak other languages with different language options to navigate the site. The place is great, very well designed. It's relatively small now, but have no doubt, it will grow! It is a privilege to be among the first members. Keep up the good work! The map is really cool!

WMP11?

Does the latest build work with WMP11? If not, has anyone done a Winamp plug-in?

Can't upload a playlist

~ October 19, 2006 at 2:23 by technobrat (Views: 241 )

I've got 2 iTunes playlists I want to upload. One is called Spin-It, and the other is a subset of
that playlist called breakbeat. I was able to upload breakbeat. But when I upload Spin-It, I
get a message that says it was uploaded, but it doesn't appear in my playlists.

Any clues?

I'm assuming there's some error parsing the playlist.
But I couldn't begin to guess what the error is.

Getting "MyStrands failed to contact the server."

~ October 10, 2006 at 8:23 by joe99chi (Views: 382 )

I see that in the MyStrands.log file, it keeps reporting this error for certain songs.

10/9/2006 11:12:27 PM - WARN: -----Start Response-----

I'm running on Windows XP with Windows Media Player.

Is there any way to resolve this problem?

Here is an example song that I'm running into this problem. I have another song by the same artist and same album and it does not show the problem.

Album: The Very Best of the Eagles [2003]

My Countdown - Last FM X MySTrands

~ September 25, 2006 at 2:09 by aphoenix13 (Views: 230 )

By Joséli Costa Jantsch

Hi Everybody!!!

Seven days ago, I told you about my concerns about Mystrands' scrobbling tool...Well, to prove my teory I decided to spend some of my free time, on this week, doing the countdown of the tracks and artist which are not at all scrobbled by Mystrands.

The Countdown from July 5 till August 13 is:

1. Alice Cooper with Axl Rose et all – Under My Wheels
2. Amilcare Ponchielli – Dance of the Hours From La Gioconda - wma
3. Axl Rose – November rain acoustic – mp3
4. Cazuza e Renato Russo – Quando Eu Estiver Cantando – mp3
5. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Mustang Sally - mp3
6. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Rollin' on the River - mp3
7. DramaGods –all songs - mp3
8. Dream Theater – Flight of the Bumble Bee (John Petrucci) – mp3
9. Dream Theater – Guitar Solo –mp3
10. Dream Theater – The Big Medley - mp3
11. Edvard Grieg – A Manhã De Peer Gynt– wma.
12. Extreme – Cry Baby - Mutha –mp3
13. Extreme – Fair Weather Faith –mp3
14. Extreme – It ('s a Monster) –mp3
15. Extreme – Love of my life (queen cover) – mp3
16. Extreme – Monica – mp3
17. Extreme – Never Been Funked - mp3
18. Extreme – Nice Place To Visit – mp3
19. Extreme – Sex 'n Love – mp3

(...and many more artists, the rest of this article can be found at my page)

* As you are able to see, there are files in wma and mp3, so the problem is not linked with that (Yeah, I was already told that wave files are not scrobbled). So, the only possible explanation for that is tha data bank of Mystrands is not so good as the one of Last fm, which accepts all the songs files that we listen.
* Ah, and before finishing here, I must say that Mystrands scroobling tool has one more little problem, it only scrobbles the songs when we listen them entirely. This not happens at Last fm, in which we have a minimun listenning time for the songs be scrobbled, much better!!! (specially if you want to do the countdown of the songs listened out of your computer, for sure, at least, it saves a lot of time).
* By the way, the only improvement that Last fm might do (for yesterday),hehehe, in my humble opinion, is the disposal of a music recomendation tool like the one that MySTrands has.

* I think till the end of this week I will be able to announce my 2nd countdown)

Songs with wrong names

~ September 3, 2006 at 3:27 by nordseemix (Views: 212 )

Hi guys,

where can we tell you about songs with wrong names and other errors?

The song that I found is by Afrika Bambaataa and has the name "Feeling Irie". When the song appears on the Mystrands homepage, it gets the name "Feeling Fire".

Let me know.
Thank you and best regards,

Daniela/ nordseemix

Frustrated newbie - can't access app on OS X

~ July 19, 2006 at 3:41 by vicki_max_elizabeth (Views: 197 )

Help - I am feeling dumber than dumb. Downloaded the Mac beta version, installed fine (seemingly), but can't make it work. When I click on the MyStrands icon (which was in a folder after install, not on my desktop), nothing happens. I poked around in the folders (plug-ins) and found the plug-in and tried that as well, but nothing. I closed and reopened iTunes to see if showed up there somehow, tried rebooting, but nothing has worked.

And I can't believe I can't find a "help" section with a question like this on the web site, so I'm feeling extra dumb if I'm the only one in the world that had this problem -

what am I overlooking here?

I'm really excited to try this out - I already own every playlist idea book and with 8000 songs in my library, I'm running out of creative ways to organize them.

Thanks in advance -

Vicki
